"Field of Dreams" Comes True for Bandits

QC River Bandits Facebook

This summer, the Quad Cities River Bandits and the Cedar Rapids Kernels will play a "once in a lifetime" game. That's according to Dave Heller, owner of the Bandits.

The two will be the first Minor League Baseball teams to play near Dyersville, next to the Field of Dreams movie site.

Last year, Major League Baseball hosted a game there between the White Sox and Yankees. It was extremely successful, so Heller called up the MLB and set up the minor league game.

"Players, coaches, the manager, all of them are just so excited. This is the real big deal. It is."

The River Bandits will play as the Davenport Blue Sox. And the Kernels will play as the Cedar Rapids Bunnies. Both are names they used in the early days of baseball. And the players will wear "throwback" uniforms.

Heller hopes fans in the Quad Cities will be able to buy tickets before they're sold to the general public.

"This may well be the last game they play at the Field of Dreams. Our game and the Major League game. That is not a permanent stadium that they built there, that is a pop-up stadium they are going to dismantle after the major league game is over."

There is still no official date for when tickets go on sale, but Heller thinks it'll be in June. And he expects a crowd of around 8,000.

The Field of Dreams game between the Davenport Blue Sox and Cedar Rapids Bunnies will be held on August 9th. And the Cincinnati Reds will host the Chicago Cubs two days later.
